The VISC Summer Regatta was held on Saturday 25 June at the Segelschule Hofbauer. Ten boats on the water, good winds and warm weather meant a great day's sailing for everyone!
After applying the VISC Handicap system the results were very close, with ties for 2nd, 4th and 6th places. To award the second and third prizes the two had to be separated by check back. Congratulations to our winners Jools and Eileen, Jean-Maxime and Anna second and John K and Brigit in third place.
Full results here. Photos will follow shortly.

Monthly race series
This year the club will organize a series of races each last Thursday of the month. The first race will be on Thursday 26 May.
The race will consist of a single circuit of the bouys on the Alte Donau (more if the wind is very strong), with a single race each time. Entries will consist of two people per boat, helm and crew, with both helm and crew receiving the same points. Guests can sail in the races, but only club members will receive points. Scoring will be by the high point system (one point for each boat behind you plus one) and at the end of the season the four highest scores will count towards the Monthly Race Series. The Monthly Race Series result will count towards the club's annual championship. The minimum number of entries for a race to take place is three.
The races will start about 6:15. All boats must be on the water by the 5 minute signal. Normal Alte Donau rules apply. Infractions of the rules can be exhonerated by a 360 penalty except collisions resulting in damage or injury, when both boats will be disqualified (zero points)
In memoriam Bob Pitt
Last week Bob sailed from us.
We knew him as a down to earth man, his feet firmly on the ground, yet he was one of the best on the water.
Always smiling, skippering the smallest radio-controlled boat, a dinghy at the Alte Donau, a fast Dart catamaran, his own boat in England and the big boats. He never missed out. Always with Helen at his side, sometimes with us.
Unbeatable in a boat, unbeatable in passing on his sailing knowledge and unbeatable in his kindness.
So long sailor

Learning how to Sail this year!
Dear future sailors,
The start of the sailing season is just around the corner. VISC will begin the season on 14 April at 19:00h with an introduction to sailing at our Thursday's sailing base Ufertaverne (An der Oberen Alten Donau 186), in the small Hofbauer sailing school training room.
Starting from then each Thursday evening you can join us at the Alte Donau to train your sailing skills or get a first hands-on induction by our experienced skippers and/or close the day with a drink or dinner in the beautiful setting at the Ufertaverne restaurant.
As in past years, the VISC will coordinate for you the official sailing training for the Austrian inland waters license (Fahrtenbereich A) in English.
This license is a great introduction to sailing and allows you to independently sail or charter a boat on Austrian lakes. The VISC offers this course in cooperation with the sailing school ''Hofbauer'' located at the Alte Donau very close to the VIC. The license consists of a theory and a practice part. This year the theory classes in English are held on 6 consecutive Mondays (excluding holidays) starting from 9 May 2016. The lessons take 3 hours each from 18:30h - 21:30h at the Hofbauer school (address: An der Oberen Alten Donau 191). The dates agreed with the sailing school are early in the season so that you have enough time to practice what you learned before the season closes in the autumn.
Theory course dates are:
9 May, 23 May, 30 May, 6 June, 13 June, 20 June.
The exam can be done any Friday afternoon after the course is concluded at the Hofbauer school. We need to coordinate the English exam with the school so that the examiner is prepared to provide the exam in English.
Costs for the theory lessons are 60 EUR plus 15 EUR for the exam.
The practice lessons and the practice test are done separately from the theory lessons. They can be done before, during or after you have taken the theory exam. 10 practice lessons have to be concluded with a sailing teacher. The practice is individually coordinated with Hofbauer school. VISC will help you to set them up if that should be necessary. They consist of 10 1 hour-training sessions with a professional sailing coach from the Hofbauer school. They can be done individually or as a small group up to 4 people. The costs vary depending on how many persons attend the lesson. If you decide to share the lessons each lesson has to be done in the same group.
The costs for the practice lessons are:
385 EUR for 1 person,
295 EUR per person if two persons share the trainer
275 EUR per person if three persons share the trainer
255 EUR per person if four persons share the trainer
As an extra there are 40 coupons included for renting a boat from the Hofbauer school on your own for training without a coach.
The fee for the practice exam is 20 EUR and another 30 EUR for the issuance of the license.
We need a minimum of 8 students in order to be able to organize the theory lessons. The English lessons are open to anyone also without relation to the UN. Please let us know if you are interested and share this information with anyone interested. We would like to gather enough students to be able to organize the course in English.
Please let us know by 30 April if you plan to attend this year’s sailing license training.
The 2016 AGM took place on February 25 and was attended by over 40 enthusiastic members. The various officers reported on the events and results of 2015 and new Committee members were elected.
The VISC Committee now presents itself as follows:
Commodore: Joep Winkels
Vice-commodore: Andrew Parker
Quartermaster: Taissa Sobolev
Log-Keeper: Gyula Kis-Benedek
Rear-Commodore (Training): Antje Reepmeyer
Rear-Commodore (Program): John Plumb
Rear-Commodore (Liaison): Malcolm Kirk

We finished the meeting with some major knot-exercises and a final 'monkey-paw'-knot-contest. At 19:30 we closed the meeting and all of us are now looking forward to the sailing-season starting on Thursday 21. April 2016 at the Ufertaverne, Alte Donau!
Clubs' Days in the Rotunda

To make it as big a success for the club as last year we need volunteers to man the stall for those two days and to help with setting up and taking down. Between these two regattas seven people successfully completed their Croatian Skipper's Certificate, and the rest of the group cruised in the Kornati National Park, visiting Piškera and Murter before returning to Vodice.
